If you’re anything like me, you dream of being free from the daily grind of having to work all day. You dream that one day money won’t be an issue, that you’ll be able to find a way to make money for you and your family that involves putting the work in once, and then reaping the benefit of that work over and over again.
Not long ago, when the internet didn’t exist (at least not for lay folk like myself), the only passive income opportunities you had was investing your money into something and hoping it would gain value. Stocks, bonds, and interest bearing bank accounts were one of the only ways you’d have a chance at having money deposited into your account without you needing to be there to earn it.
Real estate was an option also, but dealing with banks and loans, and physical buildings that could clunk out on you was (and still is) one big headache. Yes, there are some pretty big payouts with real estate, but the majority of us don’t end up owning skyscrapers in New York City.
Real estate can get pretty risky also.
Now that we have the internet, a whole new world of making money has opened up for us. Because we can now sell digital products, that we don’t have to physically reproduce every time someone buys, we have closer-than-ever access to passive income opportunities.
What is Passive Income?
Passive income is when you get paid over and over again for something you don’t have to physically work for each time. It is money generated from investments, properties, or side hustles that earn you a steady flow of money without the daily commitment of a job.
To me, it means freedom. Freedom to not have to be at the beck and call of someone else, and freedom to be able to do the exciting things in life a job prevents you from doing.
I have been online for many years trying to figure out a way to make a living from the internet. I have tried many many things. Some worked, and some didn’t. Surprisingly, one of the things that actually did work for me was becoming a Low Content Book Publisher.
What is A Low Content Book Publisher?
A low content book publisher is someone who creates low content books, which are normally books a user would write in, like a journal or a workbook, and publishes them for profit, usually on Amazon KDP.
I had already had experience in self publishing my own books on KDP in the Kindle store, so I was kind of familiar with how to format a book for Amazon. If you have read my How I Got Started post, you’ll remember I wrote a full sized, I’m talking over 100, 000 words, novel when I was younger, and when it didn’t win a contest I entered it into, I gave up on it.
Blame it on young brain, but I never did anything with that novel, in fact, I was so distraught that I didn’t win, I blanked the novel completely out of my mind, and didn’t think of it for years. (If I could just go back I’d smack myself for being such a baby and giving up!) But ya’ live and learn I suppose.
One day I stumbled across low content book publishing. I have no idea how, or what I was even searching for when it came up. It was a Rob Cubbon article on how to make journals and sell them on Amazon. I think it may have even been a Udemy course. (Sorry, if I remembered it, I’d drop you a link)
I remember thinking to myself, I can do this! This is actually something I could not only do, but have fun doing! I love creating things. These journals didn’t seem too complicated, and there was an endless possibility on what you could do with them and how you could make them look. I was pumped.
Somehow I found Low Content Book Mastery by Rebecca Holman, (used to be Journal Tsunami) and I snatched it up, and devoured it like it was a lifeline. It was one of the few things in life I had no problem catching on to, and to top it off, I was good at making these little books.
I started out by using premade interior templates from Tangent Templates, but then I branched out and just started making my own interiors in Canva. I made all my book covers in Canva.
My first books were sermon notes journals. I always thought that was a tongue twister, and ‘sermon notes journal’ never sounded right to me, but that’s what they are, books you bring to church with you so you can take notes on the sermon. I got one interior and made about 10 different covers, and uploaded them all at once. I then moved on to blank recipe books. I made a few in different niches, for example, one was a book for all your Thanksgiving recipes, one was a book for all the recipes your mom gave you. I even made a bowling themed recipe journal for my mother-in-law.
I then moved on to making password logbooks, animal themed lined journals, homeschool workbooks, and prayer journals. All of them were really easy to make. In most cases, unless you are getting really detailed with your interiors, a simple interior just consists of a page or a few pages that repeat over and over again throughout the book. In reality, you are only designing a few pages, and repeating them multiple times to form a book.
I’m telling you, this can be a lot of fun. It gets even more fun when you see the looks on people’s faces when you give them personalized notebooks for gifts. Definitely brownie points.
There are all kinds of different journals, notebooks, recipe books, logbooks, ledgers, activity books, workbooks, blank comic books, coloring books, and so so many more kinds of low content books you can create to sell on KDP. The possibilities are limitless.
So if you are looking for a way to make some passive income, creating and selling low content books is a good place to start. I don’t currently make a living from my books yet, as I have a very busy life at the moment, and creating books takes some time, however, I do make enough to where I would notice if that income wasn’t there anymore. It’s nice to have it, and it’s nice to know that someone is probably on Amazon right now, buying one of my books, and next time I log into my KDP account, I will see it in my reports, and I will smile. 🙂
If you are currently not in a busy season of life, the sky is the limit for you.
So, why should you become a low content book publisher? Because you can set up a passive income empire for yourself that will pay you over and over again, for years to come….and…….it’s a ton of fun creating the books!
