Today I am going to show how to quickly and easily remove an image’s background with just one click using Canva.
Removing a background from an image used to be complicated. Most people used tools like Photoshop, and strategically had to outline the image with the selector tool, which could be very time consuming depending on how many nooks and crannies the image had. And while manually cutting a photo out to remove its background is still the most thorough way to make sure what you want out is out, not everyone has experience using programs like Photoshop that have a steep learning curve.
In this video, I show you how to use an online tool called Canva to achieve the same thing, but with much less of a learning curve, and just a click of a button. I use Canva for all of my design needs, whether it be making an image for my blog, a pin for Pinterest, or an interior or cover for my low-content and medium-content books on Amazon KDP.

Today I’m going to be walking you through how to remove a background in an image in Canva. I’m in my Canva account right now and I have just opened a blank template. We are just going to go ahead and find a picture here by going to photos on the left hand side.
I’m going to click on photos. Canva has a lot of free photos that you can use for all kinds of purposes. I have a Canva Pro account. Sometimes you’ll see pictures with a little crown at the bottom right hand corner and that means that you either have to pay for that photo upon download if you have a free account or if you have a pro account then then you have access to all those photos.
I’m pretty sure you can do the background remover in a free account so let’s see. Let’s take this photo right here. Once you click on a photo it automatically drags it over to your canvas and you just click on that photo so you see the handles on each corner. You then go to edit image and then…. okay, see here it says background remover and shows a crown, so it might only be in the pro version that you can do this. I’m not really sure.
Anyway, so you click on background remover (BG remover) and it’s going to take a couple seconds to process. Canva will focus in on the main points of the photo and leave those elements, and remove the rest. It’s not perfect, so sometimes it doesn’t work exactly how you want it to, but it will remove what they determine the background is.
So let’s see what it does with this photo. I’m going to click back on remover. It’s going to take a few seconds. Then let’s see what it does see what it takes out.
It looks like it took a lot of the background stuff out but it didn’t take the table, the notebook, the glasses and the lamp out. It now kind of looks like an incomplete picture, but you could probably still use it.
Let’s remove the background again and see what it does. Let’s see if it does the same thing the second time around, and it looks like it does. Now you can put any other background you want in there.
So I am going to go over here to background and put this background in there, and then you would have this picture on top of whatever background you put in there. It’s definitely not a perfect solution to removing all backgrounds, but if you have a photo you want to remove the background out of, it’s worth a try.
Let’s try another one where you don’t have so much going on in the picture. Let’s go to photos and let’s choose something with a more of a focal point. Let’s choose this lady running right here. This picture has more of a focal point. It’s just her and then she has some kind of a blurred out background. She’s running next to a field or some grass, so let’s see what it does. We’re going to hit BG remover and let it work its magic.
So, it looks like it did a lot better job than the last picture. You can then go in and give her a different background. She would look good running maybe on basketball court? (laughter)
So guys, that is how you remove a background from an image on Canva. I use Canva for all my low-content books. Whenever I make book covers and interiors, I use Canva.
