Charles Ray Smith
I’m so excited to share this interview with Charles Ray Smith, the author of The Spiritual Treasure Trove: A Collection of Bible Topics for Meditation and Study.
Charles has created a thoughtful and inspiring resource designed to help readers dive deeper into Scripture, reflect on important spiritual themes, and strengthen their connection with God. It’s an honor to speak with him about the inspiration behind his book, his writing process, and the wisdom he hopes to share with readers.
Charles, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to have you here to share more about your journey and the inspiration behind your writing.
Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background?
I am a 72-year-old retired postal worker and Bible school Teacher. I’ve been married for 47 years to a charming and very supportive wife, Dolores. We have three boys and one daughter that passed away over a year ago. Perhaps the uniqueness of our family is our decision to be a God centered family. To me, that was the best decision, whereby we were happy and we were blessed abundantly. I’ve also served over 35 years as a Bible School Teacher, and there was a growth process as I strove to meet the challenges and concerns of my students. For several years, I also served in Prison Ministry, for over 20 years as a Mentor and Teacher.
This was also a unique experience because of my involvement in helping those in dire circumstances to overcome the adversity and challenges they encountered in their lives. I’ve also served in Benevolence, feeding the homeless, and caring for the indigent. Basically, I saw the need of others and inwardly my thoughts were, I can do something, I might not meet all their needs or solve all their problems, but I can try and I’m reminded of the old cliché’, “Nothing beats a failure but a try”.
What inspired you to write the Spiritual Treasure Trove?
Love for God and Love for students that desired to learn about God, be blessed by God, and have a right relationship with God. I could see it in their eyes, sometimes, they were looking for a Word from the Lord, something that would build them up in faith, something that would heal the hurt inside, something that would guide them and direct them.
Then I realized the Power of the Word of God, only could fix what was wrong in all of us. Therefore, I began to write and write and write. It took me about four years to produce the first copy. Two years later I produced a second edition.
How did you decide which Bible topics to include in the collection? Were there any that were particularly challenging to cover?
The Bible topics I selected were reflections of past experiences and the lessons learned from them, also listening to great speakers and their sermons and lessons and reading from great authors and gleaning from their Bible knowledge. I was motivated by a great hunger and thirst to know what life was about and striving to fill the void many of us have within us.
The most challenging topics were derived from my personal quest as a father to provide and protect his family. Life can be cruel and hard. There are the vicissitudes of life, days of adversity, side with days of prosperity. They must learn how to endure, overcome and not be overwhelmed or discouraged. They must learn how to handle disappointments, how to keep the faith when suffering as a Christian, how to fight and to never give up. I wanted them to read it in the Bible and also to see it in me.
Did you discover anything new or surprising during your research and writing process?
The most amazing thing I discovered was in Spiritual growth. Love for Him + Love for others>Propels you to greater heights. God draws us through Cords of Love. Therefore the long hours of research, study and writing were actually a Labor of Love, especially, knowing that my work would bless somebody, my efforts would help somebody, and God will be Glorified.
Is there a particular topic or section in the book that resonates with you most personally? Why?
The topics, “Chasing The Wind”, and “The Quest”, characterized the journey I was on, and a deeper perspective of life. In those sections, I gleaned most of my ponderings from the wise man Solomon, “The Preacher”. He was one that researched life and living and I agreed with his conclusions. His summation of life and the occupants on this planet were most amazing and accurate.
How do you envision readers using this book – individually, in small groups, or both?
I envision readers using this book in both ways. God’s Word is powerful. God’s Word is life and Spirit. God’s Word is True. Individually and collectively, the Reader will be blessed.
How do you hope The Spiritual Treasure Trove will impact readers in their spiritual journeys?
I had a young man come up to me and say, I read your book from cover to cover, I am now teaching God’s Word. I’ve had preachers and teachers respond in a very positive way concerning The Spiritual Treasure Trove. I have a good following on Facebook that interact with me on daily postings and commentary. Some use the scriptures in the book, in their daily Prayer groups. I am excited about the current impact; I am striving to have a far greater impact even though I am a novice when it comes to Social Marketing.
Have you written any other books, and do you have any plans for future books?
I have thoughts and requests to write other books, I am involved in many other activities whereby I have not pursued those ideas.
Is there anything else you’d like to add about your writing, your book, or future books?
I recognize that our current culture has Bible illiteracy prevalent. There is competition and even distractions for attention and devotion for the minds and hearts of others. There are voices that say many things, they offer many views and many opinions with many diverse conclusions and solutions.
My desire is that all men listen to the Words of God through Christ. It is a Guaranteed Win because it is God that has made us and not we ourselves. And He cannot and will not lie.
